California has a law called AB5 that determines who is classified as an independent contractor and who has to be classified as an employee, with full benefits. Supporters of the law say it will help people who should be classified as employees be properly compensated, but those against the law say the requirements are so broad that it's a lot harder, if not impossible to freelance in California.
